Tourists arrival in Puerto Princesa seen to rise 15% PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 26 July 2006

The City Tourism Council (CTC) here is optimistic it will meet its 15-percent target increase in tourists arrival this year from 120,000 in 2005.

CTC president Felisa Torres said from January to May this year, it already registered 45,000 domestic and international visitors.

"We have offered attractive tour packages to our visitors and lot of marketing are being done to realize the goal," she said.

Torres is hopeful that airline companies will support the CTC's effort through offering promotional airfares.

Aside from local and foreign tourists, she said, participants of conventions, seminars, lakbay arals, among others, also greatly boost the city tourism industry.

Torres agreed with the statement of Mayor Edward Hagedorn on the infamous May 27, 2001 Abu Sayyaf kidnapping incident in Dos Palmas Resort hotel that it was a thing of the past and tourism industry in the city and Palawan is now on the road to full recovery.

"We give due honor to Mayor Hagedorn for his all-out support to tourism players and the private sector," she said.

Torres pointed out visitors now come to the city without fear because it has the lowest crime rate among urban centers in the country.

She said isolated crimes happen but tourists are undisturbed, citing that higher number of crimes occur in New York and Thailand.

Torres said out of numerous city's tourist destinations, the best seller is the Unesco-declared World Heritage Site "Underground River", reputed be the longest known navigable subterannean river in the world.

The other is island hopping in Honda Bay, consisting of several islets with shallow reefs bordering fabulous beaches which have become favorite swimming, snorkelling and diving destinations.

These islets are Cowrie, Bat, Lu-li, Meara Marina, Snake, Pandan and Senorita.

The Crocodile Farm Institute, Butterfly Garden, Mitra Ranch, Tagkawayan Beach Resorts are also worth seeing, she cited. (PNA)
