PGMA orders all-out medical tourism campaign PDF Print E-mail

MANILA, Nov. 8 (PNA) - President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is ordering an all-out campaign to promote medical tourism nationwide.

This aims to help generate more jobs for people and revenues for government so socio-economic conditions nationwide can improve further.

President Arroyo is tapping for the campaign both public and private sectors to help improve quality and lower cost of local medical and tourist services as the Philippines is positioning to be a world leader in medical tourism.

She believes this strategy will encourage more people to visit the country since Filipinos’ competence in the medical field and Philippine tourist destinations are internationally recognized.

“We’re making our mark in reaping confidence in Filipino excellence and enterprise,” she said Wednesday during a roundtable discussion on this matter.

She attributed this to economic and political security which now prevail nationwide due to government's gains from its fiscal program which is opening up entrepreneurial opportunities for people.

The President instructed Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III to help hospitals and other health facilities nationwide adapt measures oriented towards medical tourism.

Among such facilities are Laguna province’s hot spring bath establishments which Mrs. Arroyo wants upgraded into spa salons.

“We’ll make these world-class to attract foreigners,” she said.

The President also directed Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) chief and retired police general Edgar Aglipay to further enhance housing and related services under the agency’s auspices so people abroad will choose to retire in the Philippines.

PRA, a government agency, is offering foreigners its Philippine Special Permanent Resident Visa Program so they can avail of the special resident retiree’s visa which allows them to work, do business, study, live or even stay in the country for as long as they want. (PNA)
