Thursday, 01 March 2007

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Feb. 27 (PNA) -- Puerto Princesa started today celebration of its 135th Founding Anniversary, dubbed as “Balayong Festival” from Feb. 27 to March 5, 2006.

First Lady Ellen M. Hagedorn, wife of Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn, has been dreaming about putting back the Balayong tree (Palawan Cherry) in the limelight to further improve the image of the city.

Ms. Hagedorn imagines that one day, it will be a niche of the woody plant’s stunning blooms during the months of February and March.

The city’s immense developments in the last ten years have left the light pink blossoms of the Balayong in the sidelights.

Balayong, a local Cuyuno name for Palawan Cherry, a small to medium-sized tree that is the symbol of feminine dominance, female beauty, and love in the language of berbs.

To revive the Palawan Cherry’s forlorn splendor, the city government started in 2005 the Balayong Festival and planted a thousand trees in the nature park.

Because of the victory of the first fete, the city council unanimously passed Ordinance No. 288 declaring the 4th day of March as date of the festival.

In this year’s activity, more than 500 Balayong seedlings will be planted by men and officers of the Western Command at the City Hall premises.

Mayor Hagedorn expressed gratitude to his constituents for their participation in making Puerto Princesa a model capital for hard work in protecting the balance in ecosystem, cleanest and greanest city nationwide, recipient of numerous awards in tourism, health efforts and maintenance of peace and order.

Several activities are lined up for the celebration which include food festival, bazaars, nightly shows and free concerts, garden shows, beauty contest and giving of awards.

Balayong Street Parade on March 4, where everyone will be in white and pink to depict the flowers of the Palawan cherry, will highlight the celebration. (PNA)
