Puerto Princesa prepares for 17th Feast of the Forest PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 23 May 2007

feast_of_the_forest_1Puerto Princesa City is preparing for the 17th Feast of the Forest celebration this June 23.

Mayor Edward Hagedorn ordered city environment and natural resources office head Rogelio Daquer to prepare about 40,000 seedlings of trees like 'balayong,' gemelina and mahogany for the annual reforestation activity that will highlight the event.

Authorities will hold this activity on a 17-hectare reforestation site in the mountain village of Irawan, some 15 kilometers south of Puerto Princesa City.

The site is near Irawan watershed, a primary water source for the city's residents.

Organizers of the event are expecting around 30,000 people to join the tree-planting activity.

To help promote environmental protection in the area, particularly Irawan watershed, Hagedorn extended housing assistance to his constituents.

He believes this will help minimize human destruction of natural resources.

As an added boost to the celebration, authorities planned an open air concert featuring bands and other artists from Manila aside from homegrown talents.

Dacquer said Puerto Princesa City began celebrating the Feast of the Forest in 1991 which helped reforest from 2000 to 2004 about 90 hectares of denuded land in sitio Magarwak, Barangay Sta. Lourdes.

An estimated 1.6 million trees with an average 80 percent survival rate were planted during such period. (PNA)
