ART FOR NATURE’S SAKE - Renowned Filipino artists gather for a big environmental project PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 18 June 2007

feast_of_the_forestIn an unprecedented activity for the environment, the country’s top eight artists, led by National Artists Napoleon Abueva and Benedicto “Bencab” Cabrera, will gather in Puerto Princesa City on June 23 for the city’s annual Feast of the Forest.

Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward Hagedorn will be hosting the annual festival, where at least 30,000 residents plant trees to dramatize their concern for the environment. But it will take on a rare twist this time. Eight artists will capture the festival through their work, which would then be donated to the city museum.

Aside from Abueva and Cabrera, the participating artists are Gus Albor, Virgilio “Pandy” Aviado, Elmer Borlongan, Antipas Delotavo, Julie Lluch, (Recipients of the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ 13th Artist Award), and Mark Valenzuela (a maverick artist from Dumaguete).

Mayor Edward Hagedorn with renowned Filipino artists gather for a big environmental project Each will deliver his own artistic rendition of the sea of humanity that would descend for the Feast of the Forest celebration. Their work will be a lasting memorial of the Puerto Princesa residents’ collective care for the environment.

The artists have committed to donate their work to the people of Puerto Princesa as a means of raising funds to protect the city’s forests.

Conservation International and Smart Communications are supporting the program.

Artists who would like to participate in the activity are welcome. For inquiries, call Lolit Garcia at (632) 5236023 or email her at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
