Sea turtle released back to Puerto Princesa waters PDF Print E-mail

File photo: Mayor Hagedorn to release sea turtlesPUERTO PRINCESA - Residents here released into the sea a green turtle weighing 90 kilos caught in a fishpen set up in the shallow waters off barangay Bancao-Bancao last Tuesday.

The turtle with scientific name “chelonia mydas” and locally known as “pawikan” was trapped in a fishpen owned by Delia Silacan.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)conducted proper documentation and tagging to help monitor its migration pattern.

The green turtle is an endangered species and is protected under local law.

The coastal waters of Puerto Princesa are abundant of green turtles. Some of them get caught in nets or trapped in fishpens.

Mayor Edward Hagedorn is encouraging fishermen to release captured turtles by giving a reward of PhP14,000 to everyone who reports the discovery of rare marine specie.(PNA)
