PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, June 23 (PNA) -- Former President Joseph Estrada is expected to grace the city government’s annual tree planting and conservation, dubbed as “Pista Y Ang Kagueban” or “Feast of the Forest”, on June 28 to be held in Barangay Irawan this city.

Mayor Edward Hagedorn said he invited the former President to grace the “Pista Y Ang Kagueban”, a 18-year old tree planting activity intended to reforest and rehabilitate denuded areas in Barangay Irawan and other barangays in the city.

”I already talked him, he said, he will come”, Hagedorn told PNA.

The Mayor also invited to grace the June activities Senators Loren Legarda and Pia Cayetano, environmentalists from ABS-CBN led by Gina Lopez and other nature lovers.

Visitors from Taiwan, Korea, Hawaii, Thailand and World Bank are expected to witness the tree-planting activity.

The tree-planting event is expected to draw almost 30,000 city residents, and local and foreign tourists.

The city environment and natural resources office has prepared about 100,000 seedlings of trees like "balayong", gemelina and mahogany for the annual reforestation activity.

Puerto Princesa City began celebrating the Feast of the Forest in 1991 which already reforested from 2000 to 2004 about 90 hectares of denuded land in sitio Magarwak, Barangay Sta. Lourdes.

An estimated 1.6 million trees with an average 80 percent survival rate were planted during the period. (PNA)
