Puerto Princesa to launch “UR, A Wonder of Nature” campaign on Aug. 23 PDF Print E-mail

Underground RiverPUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Aug. 15 (PNA) -- The Puerto Princesa city government is set to launch a campaign that will further boost the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP), also known as “Underground River” ranking in the ongoing internet voting of the “New 7 Wonders of Nature” of the World.

City Information Officer Alroben Goh said the city government will launch its promotional campaign dubbed as “UR, A Wonder of Nature”, on Aug. 23, 2008.

Goh explained the “UR” campaign, which also means as “Undeground River” aimed to convince city residents, Palawenos and Filipinos, both in the country and abroad to vote for the park.

Mayor Edward Hagedon has expressed concern on the park’s ranking which went down to 11th position from its previous 10th ranking.

Not only the Underground River, as of Aug. 14 online voting results, Palawan’s Tubbataha Reefs dropped from 8th to 9th place, Bohol's Chocolate Hills had slid from 9th to 10th and Mayon Volcano in Albay dramatically plunged from 18th to the 20th position.

Because of this, the city government has set again numerous voting centers at the city hall, coliseum and in elementary schools where parents could also vote.

He said that Department of Education (DepEd) officials have committed to help in the information drive which will increase its appreciation to the park.

Goh said that in the campaign, the city government will provide transportation, pumpboat and entrance, all free of charge, to high school and college students and city hall employees.

”This will enable them to personally see its uniqueness and explore the mystic of the park”, the City Hall spokesman said.

Goh stressed they are also contemplating to provide subsidy to tourists, both local and foreign visiting the World Heritage Site by the United Nations Environment, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)-declare park.

He proudly informed that PPSRNP is the “most unique” among the nature nominees in the world because it has all the qualifications of being wonder nature.

Goh said it has impressive cave systems, lush old growth tropical rainforest, interesting wildlife, unspoiled natural beauty of the area and one of the most impressive cave system in the world.

Its main focus is 8.2 kilometer long underground river, the world’s longest, that flows beneath a spectacular limestone formation before directly emptying into the sea.(PNA)
