Hagedornís reforestation campaign gets support from RPís doctors PDF Print E-mail

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Sept. 29 (PNA) -- Mayor Edward Hagedorn’s reforestation campaign received a big boost from the country’s medical practitioners.

During the 19th Mid-year Convention of the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) last week, some 300 officers of PCP, together with Hagedorn, bravely trekked and planted trees in the mountainous part of barangay Irawan, some 15 kilometers from the city proper.

Hagedorn has been spearheaded reforestation campaign dubbed as “Pista Y Ang Kagueban”, an 18-year-old tree planting activity intended to reforest and rehabilitate denuded areas in Barangay Irawan and other barangays in the city.

Since its inception, the activity has resulted in the planting of nearly two million trees, making Puerto Princesa one of the last areas in the Philippines which is covered in green.

The feast of the forest was started in 1991 to make people aware of environmental issues.

The Irawan Watershed was chosen as the first planting site because one of the biggest problems facing the city populace was a lack of potable water.

Hagedorn elated to the PCP’s support on the city’s sustainable development program anchored on agriculture and tourism in harmony with the environment.

The city mayor maintained that environment is the centerpiece defining the kind of development fit for a “City in the Forest”.

”Though we recognize the need for material wealth to survive, trees are as important in our daily lives," said Dr. Ruth Miraflores, one of the PCP officers based here.

Miraflores enumerated the endless benefits of keeping an intact forest from noise reduction to carbon zinc deposit to reduce global warming.

The tree planting activity of the PCP officers and signing of the expanded memorandum of agreement (MOA) of the Health Education Reform Order (HERO) project highlighted the recently concluded convention. (PNA)
