Puerto Princesa mountain bike tourney moves to Jan. 29-31, 2009 (Sports) PDF Print E-mail
PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Nov. 12 (PNA) -- The schedule of the cycling
competition dubbed as "2009 Puerto Princesa Mountain Bike XC
Challenge" has moved from January 16-18, 2009 to January 29- 31, 2009.

This has been informed by Joey M. Mirasol, the event's race director,
explaining that in order to accommodate mountain bike cyclists from
Cebu and other provinces in Visayas participating in the celebration
of the Sinulog and Ati-Atihan Festivals this coming January.


"We have decided to change the schedule of the race to accommodate the
request of the participants coming from Visayas, so as not to conflict
with the Sinulog and Ati-Atihan Festivals", Mirasol said.

He recently went to Cebu where he finalized officiating guidelines
with Oscar "Boying" Rodriquez, Jr, the country's only Union Cycliste
Intertionale (UCI) accredited Mountain Bike Commissaire.

He and Rodriquez have worked out some race modifications that can be
introduced to make the competition more bike-friendly, yet remain
challenging.

The three-day competition will be held at the 485-hectare Magarwak
Recreation and Nature Park in sitio Magarwak, barangay Sta. Lourdes, a
panoramic view of the several islands off Honda Bay.

Mirasol, said the sports event will be hosted by Mayor Edward Hagedorn
and city government in an efforts to promote sports tourism here, at
the same time, enhance environmental protection and conservation in
Puerto Princesa.

There are seven categories that include, Men (Juniors) ages 15 to 24
years; (Seniors) 25 to 34 years; (Executives) 35 to 44 years;
(Masters) 45 years and above. Women: Mses. ages 15 to 24 years old and
Ladies ages 25 years and above. Elite/Pro: Open.

Awards and prizes (for each category) at stake are the following;
champion (trophy, gold medal and P30,000 cash prize), first runner up
(silver medal and P20,000 cash prize) and second runner up bronze
medal and P10,000 cash award).

Mirasol reported that the competition is limited to 250 competitors
and the registration will starts on Nov. 29, 2008 and end up on Dec.
29, 2008. (PNA)
