”Underground River” remains no. 1 in search for New 7 Wonders of Nature PDF Print E-mail

By Celeste Anna R. Formoso

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Nov. 18 (PNA) - The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) at Sitio Sabang, Barangay Cabayugan is keeping a tight hold of the No. 1 spot in the search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature for nine consecutive weeks now since September 22.

Following it at No. 2 is Vietnam's Ha Long Bay and Bangladesh's Cox's Beach Bazar at the No. 3 position.

The province of Palawan's Tubbataha Reefs National Marine Park (TRNMP) is also in the Top 10, closely following at the No. 4 spot.

Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn is elated that the subterranean river is maintaining its lead in the seven wonders of nature search.

"The votes that the underground river and the park are getting only show that many people love what they saw on it. That compared to other sites competing, ours is really something woven by God's magical hands,” he said.

To boost the votes for the PPSRNP, various programs and projects are being implemented by the city government. Just recently, the U R a Wonder of Nature (URAWN) project was launched in Cabayugan by Hagedorn.

Voting for nominees in the search will continue until July 7, 2009. Then the New 7 Wonders of Nature Panel of Experts, under the leadership of Prof. Federico Mayor, former Director-General of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), will review the top 77 nominees and choose the 21 finalists, to be announced on July 21, 2009.

Voting will continue throughout 2010 and into 2011. During this time, the New7Wonders World Tour members will visit each of the finalists.

The final declaration of the New 7 Wonders of Nature will be in 2011. (PNA)
