Mutya beauties rally support to Puerto’s “Underground River” in wonder search PDF Print E-mail

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Dec. 5 (PNA) - Twenty-five candidates joining the search for Mutya ng Pilipinas 2008 here rallied their support to the inclusion of Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park or the “Underground River” in the search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

The world renowed Underground River in sitio Sabang, Barangay Cabayugan, some 80 kilometers north from this city, remain solid in the No. 1 spot in the ongoing internet voting search since September 22.

Candidates rallied their support after they personally witnessed the wonders of the park as one of the most important conservation areas in the Philippines.

The beauties observed how Mayor Edward Hagedorn and environmental-concerned agencies and the people of Puerto Princesa protect and preserve the impressive cave systems, lush old growth tropical rainforest, interesting wildlife, unspoiled natural beauty of the area and one of the most impressive cave system in the world.

Its main focus is 8.2 kilomters, world’s longest underground river that flows beneath a spectacular limestone formation before directly emptying into the sea.

Hagedorn expressed his gratitude to the support of the Mutya candidates as he is optimistic that subterranean river will maintain its lead in the seven wonders of nature search.

Recently, Miss Earth candidates also visited the park and greatly enhanced the promotion of the UNESCO-declared World Heritage Site.

The 25 Mutya candidates arrived here last Nov. 27 and the beauty pageant will culminate in the coronation night on December 7 at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum.

This year's Mutya shall promote "Beauty Tourism" with the participation of Overseas Filipino Communities within the greater Asia Pacific.

Meanwhile, voting for nominees in the search for new wonders will continue until July 7, 2009. Then the New 7 Wonders of Nature Panel of Experts, under the leadership of Prof. Federico Mayor, former Director-General of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), will review the top 77 nominees and choose the 21 finalists, to be announced on July 21, 2009.

Voting will continue throughout 2010 and into 2011. During this time, the New 7 Wonders World Tour members will visit each of the finalists.

The final declaration of the New 7 Wonders of Nature will be in 2011. (PNA)
