Crystal forest, fossilized animal remains found in Puerto Princesa Underground River PDF Print E-mail

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, March 30 (PNA) - A team of Italian scientists and cave explorers has discovered a crystal forest and a fossilized remains of a yet to be identified vertebrate that possibly dates back 20 million years ago in a five-kilometer summit cave in the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP), Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn announced recently.

Hagedorn made the announcement during the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the JCI Philippines, Inc. and the JCI Puerto Princesa Peacock, Inc., the first organizations in the country to have expressed support to the Puerto Princesa Underground River’s (PPUR) bid in the world search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature through the nationwide voting project “1Team for UR a Wonder of Nature”.

The Puerto Princesa mayor said a report submitted to him by the team of explorers revealed that the parallel cave sits on top of the PPUR, and inside it is a “virtual crystal forest of overwhelming formations of stalactites and stalagmites”.

On the fossilized remains of an animal, he said that the Italian scientists and explorers believe that it is of an animal that had existed, roamed and lived inside the park where the cave is located.

“They are now studying this fossilized remain, and if they are correct, these recent discoveries will again boost the bid of the underground river in the New 7 Wonders of Nature,” Hagedorn said.

He added that as soon as findings on the fossilized remains are confirmed, he will seek audience with President Benigno Aquino III for him to make the official announcement.

In a local radio interview, City Tourism Officer Rebecca Labit said that the discovery of the parallel “crystal cave” and the fossilized remains will further boost the campaign of the PPSRNP in the New 7 Wonders of Nature contest.

She said that the Italian team only has superlatives to describe its discovery. The team has gone back to Italy to have their recent discovery revalidated.

Formal announcement of the discovery will be made after revalidations have been conducted.

PPSRNP is the country’s pride and candidate in the global search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
