Hagedorn campaigns for support for Puerto Princesa Subterranean River PDF Print E-mail

DUMAGUETE CITY, Aug. 26 (PNA) -- Mayor Edward Hagedorn of Puerto Princesa in Palawan has called on residents and visitors in Dumaguete, the capital of Negros Oriental, to help in the nationwide campaign in support of the country’s bid to include the Puerto Princesa Underground River as one of the new best wonders of the world.

Hagedorn was a speaker at a convocation at Silliman University on Thursday, as part of the university’s 110th Founders’ Day celebration which runs through the end of this week, and held a presentation of the project including new discoveries such as the underground river.

Hagedorn said he is confident of winning the contest with the support of Dumagueteños and Negrenses, who have up to November to cast their votes for the underground river through text messaging.

Even if the underground river in Puerto Princesa is consistently at the 7th spot among the list of contenders, Hagedorn said he has to continuously go from one place to another to seek the support of everybody.

Hagedorn said the inclusion of the underground river to the new best wonders of the world has already generated ripple effects on the tourism industry of Puerto Princesa.

From 170,000 domestic and foreign tourists, 450,000 have already been recorded for Puerto Princesa. (PNA)
