DOT Calabarzon goes “full steam ahead” for PPUR as New 7 Wonders of Nature PDF Print E-mail

CALAMBA CITY, Oct. 12 (PNA) -– The country goes “full steam ahead” in its massive campaign spearheaded by President Benigno S. Aquino III through Proclamation No. 182 calling on all Filipinos here and abroad to vote for the Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) as the voting closes on November 10 in the worldwide search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Southern Tagalog Regional Director Luella Jurilla said in Wednesday’s press conference here that the DOT, alongside national government agencies, local government units, tourism industry leaders and the private sectors, have intensified their campaign and advocacy towards strengthening public awareness in the domestic and international fronts.

Jurilla briefed the media on the optimism of the Puerto Princesa Underground River, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Geological Monument, as the country’s banner site to the global search with encouraging developments from the starting entries of over 400 locations around the world, down to 77 selected by a panel of international experts and now as official finalist among the 28 contenders world wide.

“We are vying for the top New 7 Wonders of Nature as the search is tough since the Philippines competes with the other countries’ recognized heritage sites and it is important for us to boost its position,” Jurilla said. The DOT Calabarzon also includes Palawan under the Southern Tagalog scope of regional operations.

Jurilla is enjoining every Filipino here and abroad to rally behind the President’s challenge of “carving out our future” during the campaign launching, and that "voting will take mere seconds while benefits to our people will last a lifetime.”

Jurilla explained that the economic and social benefits, prestige and recognition to be gained by the Philippines are the primary considerations in the DOT’s support and contribution to the national effort to promote the PPUR as an important travel destination worthy of national pride.

She encouraged the online voting and via SMS of over a million votes daily recognizing the Filipinos’ voting power that spurred the country’s leverage as the world’s texting capital.

The multi-agency launched the SMS texting promo “Pera Sa Kweba” in a game show by the DILG, DOT, DENR and Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn last October 6 that raffles text voters with daily, bi-weekly, monthly and consolation cash prizes capping a grand prize of P25 million in the December grand draw.
Aside from the internet voting by logging on to and voting via SMS: Text PPUR and send to 2861, the multi-agency task force has launched various partnerships for the promotion of PPUR with the broadcast, print and social media and participation in the DOT’s promotional road shows, events hosting for travel, tourism and trade groups and quad media visits to Puerto Princesa and Palawan.
The familiarization visits, hosting of student bloggers and the media launches in the Visayas and Mindanao are currently undertaken to generate greater public appreciation and awareness of the 8.2-kilometer Puerto Princesa Underground River as the world’s longest underground river with unique bio-diversity and outstanding scientific, biological and geological values.

The DOT official also announced three “all-expense free” trips for the media visit and promotional tour to the Puerto Princesa Underground River to be raffled among the Calabarzon media. Winners were Jenny Glifonea of DZAT radio of Lucena City, Arlene Mariposque of Radio Veritas and Jo Gabriel of Yushi Cable TV “Umbrella Friend” Channel 6. (PNA)
